I laid in bed thinking I do need to get up and take a walk before the weather gets bad...but this was one morning I didn't have to get up and care for Bentley, my handicapped lab who still is unable to walk. It was warm enough for her to stay outside last night. Mel was having cereal for breakfast and I was scott free, but before I knew it, I was dressed in my work out clothes and hitching a ride with Mel down Memorial. I so love destinations, and thought if he would just drop me off, by the park, then I could walk back home. I didn't quite get that far and bolted at the freeway, thinking I will start here today and maybe add distance another day if this works. Sure enough it did and I will.
But the walk was an adventure. It was still pretty early and the daybreak was not yet complete. The sidewalks were slippery because of the light rain and mist and traffic had not yet gain its momentum. I hardly ever go out without a cell phone but this morning, I purposefully left it behind and just grabbed my bus card in case of a rainout. There really is something to be said about starting the morning out with a constructive intent. Sort of gives you a chance to get your thoughts in order and a good reminder to give God the day that really already belongs to him. But it is a conscious course of action.
As I walked down the sidewalks, I knew where I was headed. The path was one I had taken many a time by car, by bike and even an occasional walk. But this time it was early, and the morning was misty and overcast and the tone was different. It was more of a pensive time than an active time, even though I was moving all the while. And I absolutely love it when God presents me with times such as these. For some things have kind of settled down at our house, Molly is back at school, the girls and their little ones have gotten back into routine, and even though there are some ruffled feathers here and there, times like these reconfirm that God is in charge. As long as I stay on his path and direct my efforts towards the home base of his sovereignty, I am good to go.
But there was one thing that came to mind....I had left my cell phone at home. My initial question was, what if there was an emergency and someone needed me or I needed someone? There is something about
just having the cell phone that is a distraction in itself, and when I left, I left in a hurry and did not have time to debate the issue. I know this sounds so lame, but not having that crazy phone gave me a freedom to release any expectation of interruption and enjoy the walk, and the quietness with God.
This morning was just a nudging reminder that God is there for me on my daily walk. If only I would take the time and be disciplined enough to pursue Him when I would wake, and activate His presence by calling on his name....oh the peace that would overcome me, I know, would be sufficient for any situation that this day would hold.
Wherever we are or whatever situation we are in, if we walk down the path that God has laid forth and keep our eyes focused on his homeward bound approach, even though we might be on a slippery sidewalks, and misted with adversity, we will find our way to safe ground through the loving Sprit of Christ.
Jeremiah 7:23 but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people.Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you
Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Dear Lord, thank you for nudging me to get moving this morning, and blessing my day with your loving presence. I know that you are always there and that is me who has found distraction that lures me away.
Please let this day be a reminder to me that there is great peace in allowing you to be my first thought and including you in my daily walk and in my daily decisions. Amen
Praise God wherever you are and whatever situation He has allowed you to be in . . . His glory will shine through!
