Drummer Boy

I sat still this morning and asked the Lord what he had in mind for today...and the song the "Little Drummer Boy" came to mind...I googled the lyrics and even found an Josh Grogan itune recording (beautiful)...and I listened in hopes of figuring our what the Lord was nudging me to write. So here goes! A few weeks ago I had a chance to visit in Austin with a sorority sister that I had not seen in years...It was a sweet time of reflection and fun but with every conversation there always seems to be one thought that lingers. I am not sure how we even got to a topic that feathered this comment but she said that one time someone told her that they believed that everyone is doing the best they can...I hedged...and wasn't sure I agreed...and then I thought about it...and thought about all the times I judged someone for this or that...instead of figuring our how and why they might do what they do or act as they do or say what they do. Maybe they are doing the best they can or the best they know how to do..and they are just working with what they have got.

Ok, this is how the Little Drummer Boy song plays into my thoughts. Be careful, if you start humming this...it will stay in your mind all day!
There is a line it it that says: our finest gifts we'll bring....pa rum pa pum...to honor him. But the song continues and says this drummer boy is a poor boy who has no gift to bring to fit a king....sooo he played his best...on his drum.

Even in our poorest times...be they in spirit or physical stand...we always have something to give to God. Even if it is a prayer of Thanksgiving, or a word of comfort to someone who is hurting, or a call to someone God has put on your heart....giving comes from the heart and that heart is where Christ resides. When we are willing and able...and we seek out a place to give or a person to give to...no matter how great or small it may be...that gift becomes a gift unto Christ.

All we have to give Christ is our best....of what we have. If you are a mom...be the best mom you can be...dad too...if you are an child...be the best child you can be...if you are an employer...or an emplyee be the best...if you are a gardener...be the best... a missionary...be the best....a student too...be your best ...if you are a friend...be the best friend you can be etc....but be the best you can be unto the Lord. For His favor and in honor of HIM! That is the gift we are able to offer to our King of Kings.

God has equipped each of us with a drum for us to play of HIS choice....our acceptance and recognition of that gift...generates the beat that we offer unto Him. We might march to the beat of different drums...but Oh how God must love it when we march unto HIM! The gifts that God gives to us have been given to us to share not only for our joy and the joy of others but for His ultimate glory.

We look around each day at folks who have more than we do and are able to more than we are...but that is not what God sees...he looks in the hearts of each of us. If we give to him in sincerity and trust and faithfulness however little we have ...as the song says...."and he smiled"...that smile will be for us....from Him. For he will know what our best is...That little drummer boy, though a fictional analogy...gave what he had to give...and that too is what we are called to do...to give Christ our best in whatever we do, with whatever we have...for it is for His glory that we are called to be HIs servants on this earth.

Matthew 10:42
And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward."

And here is the history and lyrics of the song...just remember ....you might think you are poor with nothing significant to give...but it is from our heart that the true riches come....for that is where Christ dwells and disperses His bounty of lasting treasures.
The words and music to the Christmas song Little Drummer Boy was composed by Katherine K. Davis, Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone in 1958.

Little Drummer Boy: Lyrics
Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,
On my drum?

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.
May God smile upon as we celebrate this Christmas season of giving!
Praise God wherever you are and whatever situation He has allowed you to be in . . . His glory will shine through!
