She was early in her ninth month and went in for a scheduled check up, only to be told upon examination and through ultra sound that the health of the baby was in jeopardy due to an unaccounted for irregular heart beat. Concern was elevated and Lucy was sent to the hospital in New Mexico, where she lives. Grandmom, who lives in Houston was on the net plane out, no baggage just packed with worry and concern for her little girl and her now littlest grandson. By day's end the doctors decided that the safest track was to do a C-section and get this baby out. When her husband arrived, the surgery was begun, and it was successful both for mom and baby. Beck, the babies name, was three weeks early and by having him out, they would be more able to carefully monitor and manage his condition. This was Friday, and still today no assessment has been concluded. Kristy remains in Albequerkue, in limbo, just waiting to find out how this all will shake out, and stands on the power of prayer and her faith in the almighty physician who she knows is cradling this precious new born.
Life is so fragile, and never do we know how one day or another will turn out. But we have to trust that God does and even in the midst of our uncertainty, his is certain. We don't know why he allows such incidents like this to happen, but what we do know is that he will use every event for his purposes and his bringing us closer and more dependent upon him. These are times that God reemphasizes the fact that we, in all of our human power do not have the ability to control circumstances. That is a gift that only he has the ultimate power to control. Sure we can do as we may to orchestrate our best intentions but the bottom line is that God, in all his majesty is the play caller.
We have all been there at one time or another, just waiting for answers while anxiousness, weariness and concern penetrate our very soul. This, my friends is the time that God has set out for us to get to know him better. It is hard to let trust override situation, and faith to outweigh anticipation but the more able we are to look up instead of looking around, the more able we are to let God and his countenance of peace penetrate the very ground that is laden with our uncertainty. The place where prayer abounds and the relationship with Christ, if we have opened up our hearts to enter into one, takes root and becomes the beginning of a strong foundation on which we are able to stand in confidence.
God has a way of using babies as his heavenly tool to awaken us to his power and his overseeing commitment to bring us to himself. He started with baby Jesus, and still today has enabled a tiny baby as this one to impact us in ways of dependence, of awe in the creation and life of this tiny little soul, the power that we are linked to in prayer, the peace that is poured into us by trust, and the confidence produced by having a steadfast faith in knowing that his ways are not our ways. Baby Beck has no idea how he is impacting so many who are watching and waiting for conclusive test results. Oh but God does, and as he watches, he too waits to see conclusive results of our faith and truth. If we look up, we will find his peace in the midst of earthly chaos. But we can't just glance, we have to stay focused and entrenched in his love, knowing that we are never alone and Christ stands beside us as we journey through this life. He is a welcomed crutch of dependence when the road narrows and our comfort has been compromised by fear and uncertainty. He is a tower of strength to lean on when we have become weakened by weariness and anxiousness. He is our everlasting friend when we need support, and the great listener when we voice our heartfelt dreams, concerns and thoughts.
I think of Kristy, of when she heard the tears of her child on the phone, how she just got up from work, gave explanation, and got going without hesitation. No need for baggage, that would work itself out, no need to know the length of stay, that would work itself out, no need to wait for permission to come, she would be there in support regardless, and no need to be delayed by circumstances, she would move as she could knowing that if it was God's will for her to be there, he would open doors for all the arrangements. And he did. So many times we hesitate because we don't have all our ducks in a row. This was a wonderful example of doing what you are called do...when you are called to do it. No excuses, no hesitation, just a straight forward approach to following God's whispers in your heart. This was her baby....and her grandbaby, the rest of the world just had to take a back seat, until God deems otherwise.
When God allows our plans to unfold as they do, it is without hesitation or excuse. He moves and is directed by a plan of his own choosing without distraction or interruption. He opens doors and closes them according to his purposes, and when he calls on us to respond, I pretty much think he wants us to respond in the same way. Oh, but how many times do we hesitate because of this or that, and allow the world to have the front seat instead of God?
When the unexpected arises, and we are thrown in the den of uncertainty, it is God who will enable us to stand tall and stand firm on the foundation of his power, his wisdom, his grace, his strength, his mercy and his love. All we have to do is to call on his name and he will hear us and hold us close and pour his peace upon us. Please join me in praying for baby Beck.
Jeremiah 29
11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity.
In closing, be still a minute and listen to your heart beat....and realize how many times it beats in one minute without you or I having to do anything.
It is on auto...and we take this for grated time after time. Seems to me that the heart is a prime example that God has given to each of us as a reflection of his magnificent power of creation...may we consider that today as we go about our usual routine and be thankful for his hand upon us and the life he has given us....May God strengthen the heart of this little one, and keep him safely in his watch.
Dear Lord, we are all going to be faced with unexpected events that do take us to our knees in prayer. May we seek your face and know that through these times, you are giving us an opportunity to truly trust in your ways, and grow in a loving relationship with you that exceeds any other. May you train us to look up and not around, and depend on your sovereignty in all situations. Thank you Lord. Amen
Praise God wherever you are and whatever situation He has allowed you to be in . . . His glory will shine through!
