Bored

He was trying to be quiet and let everyone sleep...but there was just nothing to do...so he went in the kitchen, pulled the kitchen chair up to the sink, turned on the water and tried out the sprayer. It was working just fine and it could reach across the sink so that the water spray could shoot right at the floor. After covering the floor and the rug with a thin but complete layer of water...he realized he was hungry so William, my 2 and a half year old grandson, changed the position of the chair so that he could reach the Hershey kisses...so breakfast was now served.

It is a hilarious story...but can you imagine Dad's stomach when he had his first glace at the mornings happenings. When visiting with William on our way to lunch after church, I asked him what he did when he woke up this morning...and he told me the story...and added that his dad hurt his feelings when he talked to him. And then he said he wanted to help clean up but he had to sit in his room instead. I told him that I pretty much thought his dad's feelings were hurt too when he saw all the water on the floor...there was no comment.

He was bored...the house was quiet and dark.....even the dogs were still sleeping...he didn't know how to turn on the TV...too dark to read books..toys were all put away...etc. I love it that Dad understood his dilemma...sort of!
But so many times don't we find ourselves in a position on not knowing what to do next. There are those who finish one project and start looking for the next ...and then there are those who can't seem to figure out how to get motivated to do any project at all.

God has given us a world of opportunity...but we wait for something to grab us that will generate an interest to get us moving. I have to hand it to William...he doesn't wait around...he seeks adventure. He seeks opportunities...and maybe it was a mess in the kitchen...but he now knows how fun a sprayer can be when it is not being monitored by mom. He probably won't be doing that again but at least he pursued an opportunity that he was curious about got it out of his system and onto the table...or should I say floor. .

Too often I think we don't pursue opportunities becasue 1) we are too lazy to look for them, 2) we are hesitant to pursue something that is not comfortable
3) we are afraid of involvement becasue we don't want to get stuck doing something that isn't what we expected. I am sure there are other reasons...but in order for us to find our what really is a natural bent for our own individual personalities....we have to be willing to explore possibilities.

If any of us are bored...it is our own doing. For we are being dependent on others to plan and stimulate curiosity instead of taking an initiative on our own to find out what God has out there for us to do. Years ago my mom planted into me a slogan that said: "idleness is the devils' workshop". And the older I get the truer I realize that to be.

Galatians 6:10
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

When we are idle our minds wonder...and not only are we not doing anything constructive,..but our thoughts begin to wonder in destructive ways as well.
It is when we are busy allowing God to guide our ways and our thougths that we are most content. Think about that a minute....and I think you will agree that it is true. So what is up for your day? I have to ask myself...Am I sitting around waiting for someone else to come up with a plan for my day...or am I willing to take the initiate to be curious...and allow God to motivate me to do His will.

If we just get up and get going and move around...I am convinced that God will show us opportunities that will fill our hearts with content.

Dear Lord, Thank you for opportunities that are before us...help us to open our eyes and see them. Amen
